The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is set to celebrate its milestone tenth edition this year, recognizing outstanding talent in the African film industry. Organized by Africa Magic in association with Multichoice Nigeria, the prestigious awards have been highlighting excellence in African cinema since 2013.
For the upcoming edition, the organizers invite African filmmakers to submit their movies and films that were publicly exhibited or broadcast between December 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023. The submission portal opened on January 15, 2024, and will close on February 14, 2024.
Eligible entries include films aired in cinemas or otherwise, made-for-television movies, and television series that meet the specified terms and conditions.
The tenth edition of AMVCA will feature 27 award categories, comprising 16 non-voting categories, 9 audience voting categories, and 2 Recognition Awards – Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards. In a bid to align with global trends and benchmarks, the awards have undergone a category review, leading to the retirement of specific categories, streamlining of others, and adjustments to the voting and non-voting classifications.
Winners in the 16 non-voting categories, including Best Lead Actor and Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, Best Director, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Costume Design, will be determined by a jury composed of experienced filmmakers from across the continent. The jury, led by a head juror, will ensure the integrity of the judging process.
The remaining 8 audience voting categories will be decided by the public, retaining the engagement of viewers in the awards process. Deloitte will continue to audit the judging process and verify voting results to maintain transparency.
Categories open for public voting include Best Scripted and Unscripted Africa Magic Original, Best Digital Content Creator, Best Indigenous Language (West, East, and Southern Africa), Best Multichoice Talent Factory Film, and Best Indigenous Africa Magic Original.
Head of Content and Channels West Africa, MultiChoice, Dr. Busola Tejumola, expressed the commitment of Africa Magic to spotlighting authentic African stories and announced the bold initiative to align the award categories with global trends.
Filmmakers can submit their entries for consideration through online submission on the official AMVCA website.
The tenth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards is presented by Africa Magic in association with MultiChoice, with Amstel Malta as the headline sponsor. The awards ceremony is anticipated to be a grand celebration of African film talent later this year.
