Anticipation mounts as the 10th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) approaches, with event organizers unveiling the nominees for this year’s prestigious award categories. Scheduled for the 10th and 11th of May 2024, the ceremony promises to celebrate excellence in African film and television.
The nominee announcement, which aired on Sunday, 24th March 2024, across all Africa Magic channels, has ignited excitement among fans continent-wide. Dr. Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, expressed delight at the exceptional quality of entries received, highlighting the diversity and creativity prevalent in African cinema and television.
The awards’ organizers had earlier called for entries from 15th January to 14th February 2024, inviting filmmakers from across Africa whose productions had been publicly exhibited or broadcast from December 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023, to submit their work for consideration.
This year’s performance awards have undergone streamlining, now falling under the categories of Best Actor and Best Actress in leading or supporting roles. With a total of 27 categories, including 16 non-voting, 9 audience voting, and 2 recognition awards—Lifetime Achievement and Trailblazer Awards—the nominees represent exceptional talent across various genres and themes.
In the Best Movie category, notable contenders include “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti,” “Breath of Life,” “Over The Bridge,” “Blood Vessel,” “A Tribe Called Judah,” and “The Black Book.”
Renowned actors nominated for Best Lead Actor include Wale Ojo, Stan Nze, Marc Zinga, Gideon Okeke, Daniel Ezekiel, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Lateef Adedimeji, and Gabriel Afolayan. Similarly, the Best Lead Actress category features Segilola Ogidan, Lucie Debay, Omowunmi Dada, Ireti Doyle, Adaobi Dibor, Evelyne Ily, Kehinde Bankole, and Funke Akindele.
The voting window is now open until April 28th, 2024, offering fans an opportunity to support and honor outstanding talent showcased throughout the year. The awards ceremony, brought to viewers by Africa Magic in partnership with lead sponsor Amstel Malta, is set for the 11th of May, with a live broadcast across all Africa Magic channels on DStv and GOtv. Additional sponsors include Pepsi, Promasidor, Martell, Tecno, Verve, QuickTeller, Tiger Beer, MTN, and Indomie, promising a memorable celebration of African creativity and excellence in entertainment.
