The United States chapter of All Progressives Congress on Wednesday faulted the call for the resignation of President Bola Tinubu following his victory at the Supreme Court, saying it was uncalled for.
This was even as the APC USA warned against intimidation of tribunal and apex court justices, who have also been targeted by some Nigerians abroad.
The condemnation is coming in the wake of the protest by 30 different Nigerian diaspora organisations under the Coalition of New Nigeria Diaspora Movement, demanding the immediate resignation of the President.
The coalition’s Secretary General, Jackson Ude, while addressing a press conference on Monday had appealed to the European Union including the United Kingdom and United States of America to place visa bans on all the justices and judges of the Appeal and Supreme Courts who upheld Tinubu’s election.
Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, Chairman of the APC USA, Prof. Tai Balofin, described the protest as an unlawful development.
Balofin also described the action as contempt of court, which he said poses a grave concern for the reputation of the country.
While harping that the protest underscores the significance of adhering to the principles of the rule of law, the APC USA stressed that it is crucial to recognise that the rulings of the highest court in the land are not to be contested or disregarded to avoid undermining the foundations of Nigeria’s democratic system.
The statement read, “Our investigation revealed that the organisers are driven by a misguided pursuit of attention and shallow publicity.
“These actions, rooted in defiance of established legal procedures, only serve to sow discord and hatred within a nation that has long exemplified peaceful coexistence.
“The protest is a misdirected effort that, regrettably, seeks to incite unwarranted hostility and even the potential for conflict within a nation that has historically stood as a beacon of peace and unity.
“In light of these circumstances, the APC USA extends a firm call to the general public to refrain from engaging with these protesters from the coalition.
“Their actions are best described as a spectacle rather than a legitimate expression of grievances. We encourage all Nigerians to channel their energies into lawful and peaceful avenues to address concerns, thereby contributing to the progress and prosperity of our beloved country.
“APC USA remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the values of democracy, unity, and respect for the rule of law. We invite all Nigerians to partake in responsible and lawful methods of expressing their concerns, thus furthering the cause of our great nation.”
