A Brampton woman and a Vaughan man face charges in an airline ticket scam.

Between June 2021 and December 2021, two people allegedly misrepresented themselves as working for travel agencies based out of the United Kingdom to obtain access to a secure online booking portal belonging to a major European airline, Peel Regional Police said in a press release today (Jan. 26).

Police say two people fraudulently sold valid flight tickets to unsuspecting customers and collected the payments to benefit themselves financially.

More than 250 airline tickets were fraudulently issued and sold at a value of more than $500,000. The majority of the customers who purchased the tickets were from the Calgary area and the flights were primarily to Africa.

Gbemisola Akinrinade, 44, from Brampton faces the following charges:

Obtain by false pretense

Unlawful use of a computer

Fraud over $5,000

Possession of property obtained by crime

Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence

Fraud under $5,000

Peel police say in many fraud related cases, people in vulnerable situations are coerced, manipulated and taken advantage of for the profit of the fraudster. Police urge individuals to properly source the website they are dealing with and verify legitimacy.
