Chicken Republic’s parent company encourages reusable containers

Published:

In response to the recent decision by the Lagos State Government to ban Styrofoam and single-use plastic, Food Concepts Plc, the holding company for QSR giant Chicken Republic, has taken proactive measures to adapt to the new regulations. The company is urging its customers to consider bringing their own reusable food containers when purchasing food from Chicken Republic outlets.

In a statement signed by the Managing Director of Food Concepts PLC, Koli Abunu, the company announced that all its outlets in Lagos will immediately commence the transition away from using Styrofoam packs for both walk-in and online orders. The move aligns with the commitment to sustainability and reducing the overall plastic footprint.

The statement reads, “Effective immediately, all our outlets in Lagos will commence the transition from using Styrofoam packs for both walk-in and online orders. We encourage our citizens across the state to bring their own reusable food containers. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we will charge for reusable plastic takeaway containers henceforth. We are also actively working towards reducing our overall plastic footprint. As we navigate this transition together, our team is available to answer any questions or concerns. We apologize for any inconvenience during this adaptation to eco-friendly, sustainable options.”

The ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastic in Lagos was motivated by the need to address environmental concerns, as drainage channels in the state were frequently clogged with these materials. Despite regular cleaning and evacuation efforts, the indiscriminate distribution and usage of Styrofoam posed a significant challenge. In response, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, directed the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) to implement the ban immediately. The directive includes clamping down on production companies and distribution outlets for Styrofoam to prevent further distribution.

Food Concepts Plc’s proactive approach to the Styrofoam ban demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and aligns with global efforts to reduce plastic waste and promote eco-friendly practices in the food industry.
