Published:

American streaming giant Disney+ has unveiled the official trailer for its highly anticipated Pan-African series, ‘Iwaju’. The groundbreaking series is set to premiere globally on February 28.

‘Iwaju’ marks Disney’s first collaboration with a non-U.S. studio for a complete animated series, partnering with the pan-African comic entertainment company Kugal Media. The six-episode limited series promises to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative, vibrant animation, and culturally resonant themes.

Set in a futuristic Lagos, ‘Iwaju’ follows the journey of two children, Tola and Kole, navigating through a society divided by wealth disparities and governed by the enigmatic figure, Bode. As they confront challenges and unravel mysteries, the series explores themes of class, innocence, and the courage to challenge the status quo.

The series is written and co-directed by Kugali Media Co-founder Olufikayo “Ziki” Adeola, with stunning production design by Hamid Ibrahim and cultural consultancy by Toluwalakin Olowofoyeku.

‘Iwaju’ boasts a talented cast of Nigerian vocal artists, including Simisola Gbadamosi as Tola and Siji Soetan as Kole, along with Femi Branch, Dayo Okeniyi, and Weruche Opia lending their voices to the diverse characters.

Accompanying the series is a captivating soundtrack featuring African-influenced music composed by renowned Nigerian composer Ré Olunuga. Speaking about his involvement, Olunuga expressed his deep connection to Lagos and its myriad layers, which inspired his emotive score for ‘Iwaju’.

In addition to the series premiere, fans can look forward to the release of the mobile game “Disney: Iwájú Rising Chef” on both Android and iOS platforms on February 28, offering an immersive experience inspired by the world of ‘Iwaju’.
