Enugu State Government plans to introduce CNG buses to provide affordable transport, preserve the environment, and boost energy investments.
The Enugu State Government has announced plans to introduce Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to promote affordable and eco-friendly transportation.
The move is part of the state’s efforts to preserve the environment and provide cost-effective travel options for citizens.
The state also created a Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to oversee investments in energy and minerals.
According to Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, the new ministry will ensure proper management of the state’s mineral resources and boost energy-related investments.
Dr. Obi Ozor, the Commissioner for Transportation, added that the government is not only introducing CNG buses but also building the necessary infrastructure to support their operation.
This includes bus terminals, improved shelters, and safety gadgets to ensure smooth and secure transportation. The CNG initiative will help citizens reduce fuel costs by about half, making public transport more affordable.
The government is partnering with Greenville Energy to establish CNG stations, starting with a mother station at Ugwu Onyeama, which will serve the entire South East. Construction of additional filling stations will commence soon.
