Prominent figures in Nigeria’s fashion industry recently convened for an insightful discussion on the future of fashion, focusing on the importance of intellectual property (IP), inclusion, and influencer marketing as key factors shaping the industry’s trajectory.
The event, hosted by G. Elias, a leading Nigerian business law firm, centered on the theme “The Future of Fashion: Emerging Trends, New Challenges, and the Evolving Legal Landscape.”
The webinar featured a distinguished panel of experts who delved into the implications of design copying, the evolving legal framework, and the strategies necessary for designers and brands to protect their creative work. Participants gained crucial insights into safeguarding their intellectual property and understanding the future trends that will impact the fashion industry.
Fidelis Adewole, Managing Partner at G. Elias, stressed the importance of IP protection for designers and brands. “The fashion industry is a rapidly evolving sector where creativity and innovation are constantly tested. Yvonne Ntiamoah, former Head of the Fashion & Design Department at Radford University College, Ghana, emphasized the growing significance of diversity and inclusion in fashion, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement. She highlighted the need to bridge the gap between global perspectives and local African contexts, ensuring that all individuals in the creative industries are genuinely supported.
Building on the conversation, Rhoda Aguonigho, Fashion Consultant and Founder of Lhaude Africa, noted the amplified role of influencer marketing during the pandemic. She underscored the importance of aligning brand values with those of influencers, pointing out that authenticity is key to successful engagement and sales conversions.
Other speakers, including Oluchi Nwachukwu, Co-founder of Nextberries; Similoluwa Oyelude, Head of Intellectual Property at G. Elias; and Ebimobowei Jikenghan, Senior Associate at G. Elias, offered additional insights into the legal frameworks and trends affecting the fashion industry. The discussions underscored the urgent need for stronger legal protections for creators and highlighted the critical role of IP protection in preserving original designs.
