Federal Government approves licence for new 27,000 BPD refinery in Gombe State

Published:

The Nigerian government approves a licence for a new 27,000 BPD refinery in Gombe State, set to enhance the country’s refining capacity and oil production.

The Nigerian government, through the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), has granted approval for the establishment of a new refinery in Gombe State.

The licence has been awarded to Process Design and Development Limited, with plans to construct a 27,000 barrels per day (BPD) refinery in Dole-Wure, Akko area of the state.

The announcement was made on Thursday via the NMDPRA’s official X handle, stating that the Chief Executive of the Authority presented the licence to the Managing Director/CEO of Process Design and Development Limited.

This new refinery is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s refining capacity, joining the country’s growing network of both modular and regular refineries.

This latest approval brings the total number of refineries in Nigeria to around 10, including both modular and traditional facilities.

However, despite this increase, many of the existing refineries remain non-operational or are functioning below their capacity.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s oil refining sector, with many facilities struggling to operate efficiently.

Process Design and Development Limited, the company behind the new refinery project, is registered in Kano with registration number 487883.

The company’s directors include Adamu U. Sanda, Abdulkadir Umar, Umar S. Umar, and Bashir Umar.

The establishment of this new refinery is seen as a positive step towards addressing Nigeria’s long-standing challenges in refining its oil and reducing reliance on imported refined products.

As Nigeria continues to pursue greater self-sufficiency in petroleum production, this new refinery is expected to play a key role in meeting domestic demand and improving the nation’s refining infrastructure.
