Google, Volkswagen introduce AI integration for drivers

Published:

Google and Volkswagen have partnered to launch an AI-powered smartphone app for Volkswagen drivers, leveraging Google’s Gemini models for practical assistance.

Google and Volkswagen have teamed up to integrate advanced AI into a smartphone application specifically for Volkswagen drivers.

This innovative tool provides practical assistance, such as how to change a flat tyre, by using Google’s Gemini language models and cloud infrastructure.

The AI assistant processes text, images, and videos, delivering relevant information directly from the vehicle’s dashboard via the phone’s camera.

The app, free for 120,000 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport owners, aims for broader availability by early next year. Google has integrated Volkswagen owner manuals and instructional vehicle maintenance videos to enhance the AI’s performance.

This collaboration will strengthen Google’s position in the enterprise AI market, helping simplify tasks for everyday users.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian acknowledged the technical challenges of developing this multimodal AI assistant, stating that integrating text, images, and video data into a single tool is more complex than it seems.

The app could revolutionise the automotive industry while advancing Google’s standing in cloud computing, where it ranks third behind Amazon and Microsoft.

In 2023, Google’s cloud segment contributed $33 billion to its total $307 billion revenue. Though AI has significantly boosted Google’s earnings this year, exact figures have not been disclosed. Volkswagen has yet to release data on the app’s user engagement.
