Meta has officially acquired the Threads.com domain, transferring it under Instagram’s ownership to boost its Threads social platform.
Meta has officially acquired the domain Threads.com, confirming the transfer through the Whois database on September 24, 2024.
The domain, now registered under Instagram, was previously owned by a startup that provided a Slack alternative.
Meta initially launched its Threads social platform using the Threads.net domain. However, since the platform’s release, Threads.com gained significant attention, making it a valuable asset. In June, Shopify acquired Threads.com from the startup, which had declined previous offers but accepted due to changing circumstances.
Meta’s acquisition of Threads.com aligns with its growing social platform Threads, launched as a competitor to Twitter (now rebranded as X). With over 200 million users, Meta is expected to integrate the domain into its operations, potentially offering a refreshed experience on the platform.
Although Threads.com is not yet live, the acquisition hints at Meta’s broader plans for expanding its social network. Meta’s move could provide the boost necessary to solidify Threads as a key player in the social media landscape.
