Mixed reactions follow Erisco Foods’ ramadan campaign amid controversy

Published:

The launch of a Ramadan campaign by Erisco Foods Limited has sparked diverse reactions among Nigerians amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the company. Erisco Foods, known for producing the Nagiko Tomato Mix, which gained notoriety following a controversial review by Chioma Okoli, has initiated the Ramadan Special Promo in an apparent bid to restore consumer trust and boost sales amidst mounting calls for boycotts.

The promotional offers, shared on social media, include incentives such as extra cartons and free items with purchases of specific quantities of Erisco products. However, the campaign comes against the backdrop of widespread boycott calls for Erisco Foods products, with some Nigerians even taking to the streets to protest what they perceive as intimidation of Chioma Okoli.

On Erisco Foods’ Instagram page, users expressed skepticism towards the campaign. One user labeled it as “damage control,” while another branded the company as “bullies.” Stronger sentiments were expressed by some users, with one stating they would prefer buying “fowl shit” over Erisco Tomato Paste. Another user implied that Erisco’s promotional efforts inadvertently benefited its competitors, such as Gino, highlighting the potential impact on Erisco’s brand image.

Chioma Okoli’s arrest had previously triggered widespread outrage, drawing attention from both local and international organizations. Efforts to support her legal battle against Erisco Ltd have gained momentum, with Nigerians reportedly contributing one million Naira within a short timeframe. Inibehe Effiong, Chioma’s legal counsel, highlighted this as a testament to the power of collective action against perceived injustices.

However, amidst the controversy, social media commentator Reno Omokri has condemned calls for the blanket boycott of Erisco Foods products. Omokri argued that such actions could harm Nigeria’s economy and undermine efforts to promote locally-made goods. He emphasized the importance of supporting Nigerian companies like Erisco Foods, which contribute to job creation and economic growth.

Speculations regarding declining sales and a potential drop in demand for Erisco Foods products have surfaced, likely influencing the decision to launch the promotional campaign. Omokri reiterated his stance on supporting local businesses, urging Nigerians to rally behind companies like Erisco Foods to foster economic prosperity.
