MTN Services disrupted by underwater cable cuts across West Africa

Published:

MTN, one of the leading telco operators, is grappling with significant service disruptions across West Africa due to underwater cable cuts. The impact of these disruptions is particularly severe for MTN, given its extensive subscriber base for voice and data services.

According to a reliable source, MTN is exerting considerable efforts to address the issue and restore services to normalcy swiftly. However, analysts anticipate that full-service restoration may take approximately 5 to 6 days, although no official timeline has been provided by any network provider.

Despite the disruptions, some subscribers can still access the Internet partially, indicating the implementation of redundancy measures by operators, which involve rerouting traffic elsewhere.

Reports confirm that the cable cut occurred at a depth of around 3,000 meters, likely triggered by a geological event such as a landslide. Despite the interruption in call and data transfer, the effectiveness of redundancy measures ensured that certain users remained connected.

Industry insiders highlight the importance of partnerships among cable companies in ensuring redundancy within the network. Such collaborations enable the swift activation of alternative routes during critical incidents like cable cuts.

MTN acknowledged the situation, revealing that three other subsea cable systems in the area were also affected. Repair efforts are underway, with the deployment of a cable ship for joint repair operations.

In a statement on its website, MTN assured customers of its commitment to repair and restore the network without delay. The telco emphasized its collaboration with partners to mitigate the impact of the damage and reroute traffic to minimize disruptions.

MTN expressed gratitude for customers’ understanding and patience during this period, reaffirming its dedication to strengthening infrastructure to prevent future disruptions. The telco aims to achieve full service recovery as expeditiously as possible, recognizing the critical importance of network reliability.
