The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), in collaboration with industry leaders such as Meta, Intel, Huawei, and ATCON, hosted a stakeholder forum in Lagos to discuss the adoption of 6GHz Open Wi-Fi in Nigeria.

The event aligns with the NCC’s goals of effective regulation, market growth, and policy implementation aimed at improving high-speed internet access for Nigerians.

Dr. Aminu Maida, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, emphasized the commission’s role in fostering policies that support the economic success of Nigerians. He stated that the 6GHz spectrum offers a significant opportunity to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet and advanced applications.

He further noted the importance of Wi-Fi in distributing broadband connectivity across homes and offices, especially as existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands become saturated.

Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, President of ATCON, underscored the global trend of adopting the 6GHz band for Wi-Fi 6 and IMT deployment. He urged Nigeria to align its spectrum policies with international standards to foster trade, innovation, and digital inclusion, advocating for affordable and equitable access to high-speed internet.

Meta’s Fargani Tambeayuk, Director of Public Policy for Francophone Africa, highlighted Nigeria’s 66% internet traffic growth within a year and praised the country’s $2 billion fiber-optic project. He emphasized that adopting 6GHz technology will further propel Nigeria’s economic growth.

Experts, including Judith Okonkwo from Imisi 3D Creation Lab, and Engr. Prof. Caroline Alenoghena from the Federal University of Minna, discussed the potential benefits of the 6GHz spectrum.

These include increased wireless capacity, reduced congestion, enhanced telemedicine, and real-time remote assistance (RRA) applications in various sectors such as education, healthcare, and entertainment.

Huawei’s Daniel Obam and Intel’s Dr. Bienvenu Agbokponto Soglo both emphasized the need for Nigeria to strengthen its transmission network and adopt 6GHz technology to enhance connectivity.

Dr. Soglo confirmed that technical studies show the 6GHz band can be used without disrupting existing operations, urging Nigeria to follow the global trend of opening the band for innovation and connectivity improvements.
