TCN Managing Director Engr. Sule Abdulaziz expresses confidence in achieving stable 24-hour power supply in Nigeria within five years.
Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has expressed confidence that Nigeria will achieve a stable, 24-hour power supply within the next five years.
Speaking during an interview with Channels TV in Abuja, Abdulaziz assured that the country would reach the target of generating between 20,000 and 25,000 megawatts (MW) in under five years.
When asked about the timeline for consistent power supply, he responded, “We are going to get it in less than five years.” He credited the steady progress in the power sector to the efforts of the current Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who is focused on addressing key issues rather than making superficial changes.
Abdulaziz noted that some Nigerians are already experiencing improved electricity supply and emphasized that this trend would continue.
He remarked, “If you ask Nigerians honestly, they all know there is improvement in power now that this regime came. From the time Adelabu took over till now, there has been a great improvement.”
He also highlighted the relative affordability of electricity in Nigeria compared to other African countries like Niger, Burkina Faso, and Senegal, noting that while Nigerians feel the pinch of increasing electricity costs, they still pay less than their counterparts in these nations.
Despite these improvements, Nigeria’s power sector still faces significant challenges. The national grid currently generates about 4,500MW for a population of over 200 million people, far below the output of countries like South Africa, which generates approximately 50,000MW for its 59 million residents.
