Sambo, a combat sport that integrates elements of judo, jujutsu, boxing, and folk wrestling, is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) but has not yet been included as an Olympic event.
Jatau, the sole Nigerian representative, remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, successfully overcoming competitors from Morocco, Kazakhstan, and Romania to secure the top position.
In her post-victory remarks, Jatau expressed her gratitude to the Sambo Association of Nigeria (SAN) for their unwavering support, particularly acknowledging the efforts of SAN President Loveth Howells and Vice President Sheriff Hammed.
She highlighted the challenges faced in reaching the tournament and the personal support that helped make her participation possible.
“I am so happy to be part of the tournament and I must thank the Sambo Association of Nigeria for making it possible for me to be here.
It was not easy, but with determination and God’s grace, I triumphed. I hope my victory will inspire more athletes to embrace Sambo in Nigeria,” Jatau said.
SAN President Loveth Howells emphasized that Jatau’s victory demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to embracing and popularizing the sport.
The association aims to enhance the sport’s profile in Nigeria and engage with the IOC to consider Sambo for inclusion in future Olympic Games.
Vice President Sheriff Hammed also commended Howells for her dedication to the sport and pledged to continue promoting Sambo and encouraging broader participation.
