Nigeria’s population is set to increase by 54% by 2050, rising to 357 million, as per the 2024 World Population Data Sheet released by the Population Reference Bureau (PRB).
Currently, Nigeria’s population stands at 232 million, making up 2.85% of the world’s total population.
Globally, the population will reach nearly 9.6 billion by 2050, up from today’s over eight billion. The report also projects population growth in other countries, such as India, which will rise to 1.7 billion, and Tanzania, where a nearly 90% increase is expected. Meanwhile, countries like the Republic of Korea will experience population declines.
The report highlights age structure trends, noting that 10% of the world’s population is aged 65 or older, while 25% are under 15. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the world’s youngest region, with 41% of its population aged 15 or younger.
It further discusses the importance of improving access to primary health care, which remains limited for 50% of the global population.
Investments in primary health care could significantly improve health outcomes and increase life expectancy in low and middle-income countries.
