The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has disclosed plans to distribute the new General Multipurpose Card (GMPC) to applicants through their respective banks, according to a statement signed by the commission’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke.
The GMPC, which will replace the existing National Identity card, is designed to provide a single, versatile solution, eliminating the need for multiple cards. In collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), the card will offer payment and financial functionalities.
Powered by the AFRIGO card scheme, an indigenous scheme supported by NIBSS, the GMPC will streamline the process for applicants. Individuals can request the card using their National Identification Number (NIN) through the self-service online portal, NIMC offices, or their respective banks.
The distribution process will adhere to existing protocols for issuing Debit/Credit cards, with applicants able to pick up their cards at designated centers or opt for delivery to their preferred location at an additional cost.
Previously announced by NIMC, registered Nigerians will soon have access to a National ID card with payment features, facilitating entry to various social and financial services. Supported by NIBSS’ AfriGO, a national domestic card scheme, the ID card will feature verifiable identity attributes, operating under the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.
