During a courtesy visit by the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA) after its recent ICT Growth Conference, Engr. Ikechukwu Nnamani, CEO of Digital Realty (Nigeria), emphasized the importance of ethical artificial intelligence (AI) solutions.
Nnamani noted that globally, there are more non-ethical AI solutions being developed compared to ethical ones, as some developers prioritize profits over responsibility.
This has prompted many countries, including the U.S., to seek regulatory frameworks that ensure AI safety and best practices.
Nnamani praised Nigerian regulators for their ongoing efforts to address the potential risks of AI before its widespread adoption in the country. He noted that Nigeria’s early stage in AI development presents an opportunity for government bodies to mitigate potential harm through proactive policies.
He also dispelled fears about AI leading to widespread job losses, arguing that AI will require retraining and upskilling rather than eliminating jobs.
Addressing the state of data centres in Nigeria, Nnamani pointed out that while the country has seen an increase in operational data centres, it still falls significantly short of the capacity needed to support its growing digital economy.
Nigeria should have 600 megawatts of IT load, but currently only has about 30 megawatts. He emphasized that achieving a truly digital economy will require substantial investment and foresight from both the private and public sectors.
Nnamani also outlined key challenges for data centre operations in Nigeria, including power supply and FOREX instability. He urged the government to focus on resolving these issues to create a more stable business environment.
Despite these challenges, he praised Nigerian regulators for their supportive role in the telecom industry.
The NITRA ICT Growth Conference brought together key stakeholders to explore the future of AI deployment and development in Nigeria.
