Ogun State partners with Oyan Dam to produce clean energy, advancing its leadership in circular economy practices for industrial and domestic growth.
The Ogun State Government has announced plans to collaborate with Oyan Dam to generate hydropower as part of its commitment to clean energy solutions.
This initiative aims to meet the energy needs of industries and households while providing surplus power for sale to other states.

The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed this during a meeting with a delegation of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) National Experts on Advancing Nigeria’s Green and Just Transition to Net Zero Through Circular Economy Practices, held in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Oresanya highlighted the state’s dedication to adopting circular economy practices to transition to cleaner energy.
He revealed that Ogun State is actively encouraging companies within its borders to leverage the benefits of this approach, aligning with the new national policy that empowers states to generate their own energy for industrial growth.
“As Nigeria’s industrial hub, with over 700 large and 300 smaller industries, clean energy is essential for Ogun State.
By utilising circular economy practices, we aim to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, cut production costs, and mitigate environmental pollution,” Oresanya said.
The commissioner further noted the state’s leadership in clean energy innovations, including being the first in Nigeria to adopt Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for public transportation and electric bikes as an alternative to fossil-fuel-powered motorcycles.
Ogun State is already recycling over 1,400 metric tonnes of plastic and 1,200 tonnes of paper, along with ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
The state government plans to integrate these practices into its energy generation strategies to align with its vision for sustainable development.
Speaking at the event, UNIDO delegation lead, Mr Oluyomi Banjo, commended Ogun State for its progress in advancing green and just transition initiatives.
Banjo revealed that the state is one of only five in Nigeria to pass UNIDO’s assessment on transitioning to net zero through circular economic practices.
“With the adoption of the national policy on energy through the circular economy, Ogun State is poised to attract more industries, further solidifying its position as Nigeria’s industrial capital,” Banjo said.
