As the 27-year-old student from a family of subsistence farmers in northern Nigeria struggled to fund his education, his father was on the brink of selling the family’s only land, their primary source of livelihood.

However, OPay, a leading fintech institution, came to his rescue with a timely scholarship that not only covered his tuition but also provided additional resources to support his academic and personal growth.

OPay’s scholarship programme has been a beacon of hope for many students, offering a lifeline to those who face financial challenges.

The scholarship, which helps cover tuition fees and provides extra support for students, has transformed Ayuba Bello’s life, allowing him to pursue his studies without the guilt of causing his family to lose their land.

Speaking about the impact, Bello shared his relief: “I didn’t want any of my siblings to say that it was because of my education that the family land was sold.

I am happy that OPay came to the rescue just in time. Selling the family land would have made me feel guilty for years.”

The intervention of OPay allowed Bello’s family to continue farming, and they were able to sell enough produce to meet other household needs.

Bello’s father praised OPay’s contribution, saying, “OPay’s scholarship didn’t just help Ayuba; it helped our entire family.”

With the rising cost of education in Nigeria, where financial hardships remain a significant barrier, OPay’s scholarship programme serves as a lifeline for many students.

According to a 2021 Statista report, 41% of students in upper secondary education are out of school, primarily due to lack of funds. OPay’s initiative has ensured that talented students like Bello are not forced to abandon their dreams.

Elizabeth Wang, Executive Director and Chief Commercial Officer of OPay, emphasized the broader impact of education, stating, “Ayuba Bello’s story is a powerful example of how access to education can transform lives.

Our goal is to ensure that no talented student has to sacrifice their dreams or their family’s livelihood because of financial constraints.”

Bello, who is studying political science, expressed his determination to use his education to benefit his community.

“I want to use my knowledge to improve farming techniques in my community. This scholarship isn’t just an opportunity for me; it’s a chance to uplift others.”
