Police Pursue Arrest of Boluwatife Olowu Following Allegations of Homosexual Activities

Published:

On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, the Nigeria Police Force, armed with an arrest warrant, attempted to apprehend Boluwatife Olowu, the son of renowned media practitioner Folake Sokoya.

The police action follows allegations of Boluwatife’s involvement in homosexual activities, as uncovered by a visitation panel set up by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The panel, which was established to investigate ongoing crises at the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), now known as the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), implicated Boluwatife and other individuals in engaging in homosexual practices, which are illegal in Nigeria.

Officers from the Ikorodu Police Division stormed Sokoya’s residence at No. 35, Kayode Street, Aaga, Ikorodu, Lagos.

The panel’s findings, still unreleased to the public, have led to the issuance of arrest warrants for those implicated, including Boluwatife, who remains at large.

An insider from the police revealed that the panel discovered a previous accusation against Boluwatife—that he was a suspected cultist—stemmed from a fallout with his alleged gay partner, Adio Lawal, and other individuals at the institution involved in similar activities.

This accusation led to an assault on Boluwatife and his mother in 2018 by a LASPOTECH security guard.

The visitation panel, commissioned in 2019, aimed to uncover the root causes of the crises at the institution.

In 2020, Folake Sokoya and her son presented their case of assault to the panel, which subsequently discovered Boluwatife’s alleged involvement in homosexual activities along with certain students, lecturers, and security guards.

The panel’s investigations were delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic but eventually led to an arrest warrant being issued after Boluwatife and his mother failed to respond to multiple summonses.

A panel member, who requested anonymity, stated, “When we found out that Boluwatife, whom his journalist mother was advocating for, was involved in gay activities, we invited them to appear before the panel again in 2023. They didn’t honour the invitation twice, leading to the issuance of the arrest warrant.”

Sokoya has been actively seeking justice for the assault on her and her son, publicly petitioning the institution and the Lagos State Government to release the visitation panel’s findings.

The case continues to highlight issues surrounding LGBTQ rights and the enforcement of anti-homosexuality laws in Nigeria.
