Stanbic IBTC, a member of the Standard Bank Group, has taken a significant step towards enhancing education and promoting sustainable development by adopting four schools under its Adopt-a-School program in Nigeria.
The selected schools for adoption include Methodist School Mbiafun Nkwono Ikono in Akwa Ibom State, Aramoko District School in Ekiti State, Magin Rafi Model Primary School Tudun Wada in Sokoto State, and Mala Kachallah Model School in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Dr. Demola Sogunle, CEO of Stanbic IBTC, emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting the bank’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies. He stated, “Our dedication to adopting these schools underscores our commitment to sustainability and our desire to make a positive impact on communities.”
Dr. Sogunle stressed the socio-economic significance of the initiative, noting that education is fundamental to societal development. By adopting these schools, Stanbic IBTC aims not only to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 but also to invest in the future of these communities.
As part of the adoption process, Stanbic IBTC renovated and rebuilt classroom blocks, creating modern and conducive learning environments. The initiative also involved furnishing classrooms, establishing computer laboratories, and providing digital resources to empower students.
Additionally, the bank created an inclusive educational ecosystem by providing 10-seater workstations and renovating toilet blocks to ensure the availability of essential resources for students.
Stanbic IBTC demonstrated its commitment to sustainable construction practices by prioritizing passive cooling and ventilation techniques, water conservation through rainwater harvesting, and the installation of energy-efficient appliances and lighting solutions in the facilities.
Dr. Demola reiterated Stanbic IBTC’s commitment to responsible corporate citizenship, emphasizing the goal of making a lasting positive impact on communities and enabling sustainable environments for future generations.
The Adopt-a-School program is structured upon Stanbic IBTC’s Social, Environmental, and Economic (SEE) framework, aligning with the Group’s mission to be a responsible corporate citizen committed to driving positive change in society.
