Starlink has launched a more affordable internet kit in Kenya, priced at KES 27,000 ($208.38), with a monthly plan of $30.87.
Starlink has introduced a new, cost-effective internet kit in Kenya, priced at KES 27,000 ($208.38). The kit, called Starlink Mini, offers speeds of up to 100Mbps and targets customers seeking cheaper and faster internet options.
This release comes shortly after Safaricom, Kenya’s largest internet service provider, enhanced its fibre internet speeds to maintain its competitive edge.
Safaricom’s recent upgrades include boosting its 10Mbps plan to 15Mbps and its 20Mbps package to 30Mbps, both available at KES 3,000 ($23).
Additionally, Safaricom introduced a 1Gbps plan for heavy internet users, priced at KES 20,000 ($155), marking its intent to solidify its place in Kenya’s expanding internet market.
As competition between traditional telecom companies and satellite providers like Starlink intensifies, Safaricom has urged the Communications Authority of Kenya to implement stricter regulations for satellite services.
This debate extends across Africa, where telecom companies in countries such as Zimbabwe and Nigeria have also raised concerns about satellite providers’ ability to operate without significant infrastructure investments.
Starlink’s entry has disrupted the telecommunications industry across Africa, offering fast, affordable internet, particularly in remote areas. In Nigeria, Starlink became the third-largest internet provider in two years, partnering with local operators to expand its reach.
As the battle for market dominance continues, traditional telecom providers like Safaricom are introducing innovative services, such as bundled family plans that combine mobile, SMS, and home internet, to provide added value.
Satellite providers, like Starlink, will need to navigate regulatory challenges and maintain competitive pricing to succeed in the long term.
