In a comprehensive study conducted by TRG Datacenters, the work-related services and platforms that have experienced the most significant global outages over the past 12 months were identified, shedding light on the reliability issues faced by some of the most widely used digital tools.
The study analyzed 30 work-related platforms, focusing on major global outages where the entire platform was rendered unavailable.
Monday.com emerged as the platform with the most frequent outages, recording 10 major crashes last year, with each outage lasting an average of 45 minutes and affecting 225,000 users. This frequent disruption resulted in the lowest reliability score in the study, at 25.5.
Gmail and Microsoft Teams, two of the most widely used platforms globally, each experienced six major outages. Gmail’s disruptions, affecting over 1.8 billion users, lasted an average of 3.5 hours, yet it managed to maintain a higher reliability score of 55.0. In contrast, Microsoft Teams, with outages averaging over five hours, impacted 280 million users, leading to a significantly lower reliability score of 20.7.
Other platforms like Slack, Outlook, Google Drive, GitHub, ClickUp, Salesforce, Zoom, and Notion were also featured in the study. Notably, Google Drive, despite being used by over a billion people, achieved the highest reliability score of 61.7, with its outages being shorter, averaging 1.5 hours.
Slack, which suffered five major outages, managed to maintain a relatively high-reliability score of 45.8 due to its shorter outage duration of just 45 minutes on average, impacting 18 million users. In contrast, Outlook, with the same number of outages as Slack but with a much longer downtime of five hours, had a lower reliability score of 26.7.
The study highlights the growing challenge for platforms as their user bases expand. A spokesperson for TRG Datacenters commented, “The reliability of a platform becomes increasingly difficult to maintain as its user base grows. A single outage can impact millions or even billions of users, making it crucial for enterprises to address downtime swiftly and minimize disruptions.”
